Our Day in Dujiangyan
29 Jan 2026

One of the most popular day trips to take from Chengdu is to Dujiangyan. I’ve been there a couple of times myself but sure enough last autumn it was the destination of our much-anticipated TeachDiscoverChina social, another first for us as a group. So this gives us a wonderful opportunity to share our adventure to see the legendary Dujiangyan Irrigation System and a few nearby sites. And as always the journey was made better with the delightful company of our Sichuan-based TEFL teachers.

About Dujiangyan

About 48km west of Chengdu city centre lies the county-level city of Dujiangyan which is famously known for its more than 2000-year-old Dujiangyan Irrigation System. An amazing feat of engineering and construction that was built under the direction of the revered local official Li Bing and his son. The ancient waterworks prevented severe flooding and transformed Chengdu, providing irrigation to the region for thousands of years making Sichuan a prosperous agricultural province in China. This is one of the main reasons why Chengdu is known as the ‘Land of Abundance’. Visitors to the site will gain fascinating insight and a great appreciation of the ingenuity and history of people from the Qin Dynasty.

The wider Dujiangyan scenic area also provides plenty to see and do. From crossing the Nanqiao Bridge and Anlan Suspension Bridge, visiting Erwang Temple, hiking Yulei Mountain and reaching the top of the Yulei Pavilion Observation point for the best view of the irrigation system – there is a seamless and fantastic blend of natural beauty and ancient history for tourists. If you have more time or have a weekend to fill then the nearby Mount Qingcheng, a famed tranquil Taoist mountain, make a natural and great double bill – along with the Dujiangyan scenic area, the two form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And of course there is also a panda base in Dujiangyan and unlike the one in Chengdu this features the ‘Panda Loving Care Program’ which allows tourists to get up close and personal and take care of these furry creatures for a day.

Our Day in Dujiangyan

As a benefit being a TEFL teacher with TeachDiscoverChina we arranged the journey to Dujiangyan from Chengdu, covered the scenic area entrance and tour guide fees, lunch, and transportation during the time together.

On the Saturday the weather Gods had answered our prayers as a light drizzle subsided and a comfortable autumn breeze descended over Chengdu as we met, contrary to heavy rain predicted by the forecasts. We all congregated outside Xipu Railyway Station, which is on line 2 of Chengdu Metro, at 09:45am in the morning. Some of our teachers from further afield in Sichuan stayed overnight in a hotel. It was wonderful to see everyone and a joy for them to meet each other, some for the first time, and chitchat (which really is the main reason for the trip).

When the clock struck 10:21am we all boarded the high-speed train to Lidui Park Station in Dujiangyan. After a 20 min ride we arrived and the first thing on the itinerary was to see the Giant Panda Selfie Sculpture at Yangtianwo Square which is very hot on Chinese social media these days. There was a professional photography taking pictures for tourists and as you can see above we duly obliged.

At 11:30am we took 10-min taxi rides to a traditional Sichuan restaurant where we ate sumptuous traditional Sichuan cuisine. After 90 mins of eating and drinking, with full stomachs, we arrived at the Dujiangyan Scenic Area where our insightful English language tour guide was waiting. We took another group photo by the iconic nanqiao bridge then entered the scenic area. We followed and listened intently to the tour guide to the irrigation system learning and witnessing the incredible feat and piece of history.

Afterward, we crossed the Anlan Suspension Bridge, climbed Yulei Mountain and visited Erwang Temple. When we came back down, the easiest leg of the tour, we took 30 mins deserved rest at the nearby ancient town pleasantly drinking glorious juice and milk tea which was on us. After the last gulp of juice and milk tea trickled down our throats we headed back together to Lidui Park station, conveniently just a 15 min walk away. The whole trip went smoothly and we made it on time to return to Chengdu on the 17:52pm train. Can’t wait till the next one!
